A fresh, citrus fragrance

A lemon is an oval shaped citrus fruit with a thick skin and a fragrant, acidic juice. This is a fruit which grows on a species of a small evergreen tree which Is part of the flowering plant family Rutaceae. The fruit begins life as a seedling before growing into a small green fruit, which later turns bright yellow when ripened. Lemon perfumes typically have a fresh, uplifting sense about them.
The origin and history
The history and the origin of this fruit is a little unclear. It is thought they may have first been grown in Northeast India, Northern Burma or China. They entered Southern Italy ,around the second century AD, although they were not widely grown during this time. A few hundred years later in 700 AD Lemons were introduced to the countries of Persia, Iraq and Egypt. Eventually the fruit made its way to America when its seeds were carried aboard one of the infamous Christopher Columbus’ ships in 1493 which voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean.
How Lemon is used
This fruit is used in a variety of different ways throughout the world. The juice can be used in both cooking and cleaning, the pulp and rind can also be a baker’s best friend for cakes. It is used to flavour carbonated water to make lemonade and slices of lemon are a popular garnish for many drinks. Lemon essential oil is also a popular aromatherapy oil, offering relaxation benefits.
Lemon perfumes
This fruit is a fresh citrus fragrance offering a zesty and uplifting aroma. It is a common perfume and fragrance ingredient, often featured in light, summer fragrances as well as many well known perfumes and aftershaves. The citrus from the lemon can dilute the sometimes overpowering rich floral scents found in fragrances creating a perfectly balanced partnership. It can be described as a wonderfully uplifting scent and is quite often used as a fantastic light top note when creating fragrances for both men and women.
Perfumeries and Fashion Houses often partner the zingy fragrance with the unique, floral, yet spicy fragrance of bergamot (the oily substance extracted from a Seville orange), the floral scents of lavender, rose, geranium, or the deep woody, rich scents of sandalwood and ylang ylang.
