History of Paco Rabanne

Born as Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo in 1934, Paco Rabanne spent the early years of his life in the Spanish Basque Country.

Fashion clearly runs in the family veins as his mother worked as a head seamstress at Balenciaga. After his father, a Republican Colonel, was executed during the Spanish Civil War, Paco and his mother escaped and fled to France. It is here, at age 5, where Francisco changed his name to Paco Rabanne.

Originally training as an architect, Paco Rabanne began his career in fashion by creating jewellery for high-end brands such as Dior, Balenciaga and Givenchy. In 1966, he founded his own fashion house and debuted his brand with “Manifesto: 12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials.” This sparked a trend of experimenting with an array of materials, including metal, paper and plastic, creating iconic looks such as his chainmail dress and gold-plated mini dress.

Paco Rabanne also had several famous muses, who represented the time perfectly – from Brigitte Bardot to Audrey Hepburn. Perhaps one of his best-known pieces is the green costume worn by Jane Fonda in sci-fi film Barbarella.

Since its debut, the Paco Rabanne name quickly became known for its innovative style and boundary-pushing ideas.

Paco Rabanne Fragrances

It is not just fashion that the brand is known for, Paco Rabanne fragrances are legendary and certainly carry the forward-thinking ethos that has been with the brand since its inception. It’s also a testament that the first fragrance ever produced by Paco Rabanne is still available today – proving its style and scent both stand the test of time.

In 1968, Rabanne began collaborating with Spanish group Puig who acquired the license for Paco Rabanne perfumes and just one year later, the Calandre feminine fragrance debuted. It was known for its bold floral scent, defying traditional perfume at that time. True to the his stylish aesthetic, the name is taken from the chrome-plated front grille of a Rolls-Royce and the bottle offers a modern look inspired by the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This sophisticated and fashionable bottle idea has lived on in all future designs, where the style becomes almost as desirable as the fragrance itself!

In 1973, Paco Rabanne and Puig took the men’s fragrance world by storm with Pour Homme – another scent that is still available today.

Though Puig is now the owner of the Paco Rabanne fragrances, the revolutionary scents have continued with 1 Million, XS and Invictus, to name just a few. The brand even launched unisex scents – proving Paco Rabanne continues to make the rules, not follow them.

The brand offers an eclectic mix of men’s fragrances, each delivering their own unique scent to appeal to different personalities and tastes.

Meaning ‘unconquerable’, Invictus is the embodiment of a hero, and this scent is one of victory. Combining freshness and animal sensuality, the brand describes this pairing as two forces that nothing, and nobody, can resist.

Pour Homme

Pour Homme, a pure classic. Aromatic ferns, lavender and tarragon combine with a subtle hint of freshly shaved skin for a light radiance. The lower tones of warm woods and honeyed tobacco add a full-bodied masculine touch. Nothing beats the charm of a classic.

XS is all about the experience, to dare to live in excess. This fragrance pushes the limits, just like its wearer with spicy and sensual wood scents contrasting with fresh explosions of mint, juniper berries and geranium.

1 Million

The fragrance for the individual. Life is not about playing by the rules and neither is this fragrance. Defined as complex, its leather aromas combine with sweet and juicy mandarin and peppermint for a contrasting mix. Add in a touch of pink cinnamon and this spicy scent is ready for you to flaunt your individuality.

1 Million Lucky

Life is a game. Bring luck to yours with 1 Million Lucky. This is an addictive and exhilarating fragrance without limits. It begins with a woody fragrance lined with aromatic hazelnut followed by a zesty punch of tart green plum for a refreshing blast to the senses.
