Montblanc International is a German manufacturing company based in Hamburg which produces luxury goods including items for travel, writing implements, jewellery, watches and fragrances. It is renowned for its design, execution and style alongside the highest quality craftsmanship.
The company philosophy is ‘the creators put their soul into actively composing pieces that embrace and symbolise the values that shape Montblanc as a brand’ the company also believes that ‘everyone can leave a mark’.
How it all began
The company was originally developed by Hamburg banker Alfred Nehemias and August Eberstein, a Berlin engineer in 1906 where they began producing simple pens. The business went through a variety of ownership in quick succession with Wilhelm Dziambor, Christian Lausen, and then Claus Johannes Voss taking the reins.
In 1909 the first pen was created and named the Rouge et Noir. The following year the pen which was to later give the company its new name, ‘Montblanc’, was made.
In 1977 Alfred Dunhill Limited took over the business and made some changes to the product line which included dropping the lower priced pen range and using the brand on a wide range of luxury products, not just pens.
Currently the company is a part of the Richemont group, which is a luxury goods holding company based in Switzerland whose companies include well known brands such as Cartier and Chloe.
The logo is a trademarked white six pointed snowcap with rounded edges, which is a representative of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, from above.
This symbol was first introduced in 1913, there is also a commonly recurring theme on the of the number 4810 which is the mountain’s height in metres. The number was engraved on each of the Meisterstück pen nibs starting in 1929.
The brand’s Global Brand Ambassador outside of the United States was announced In January 2014. Australian actor Hugh Jackman, best known for his role as Wolverine in X-Men, accepted the role.
Currently the Irish Stage and Screen actor Cillian Murphy, best known for his role as Thomas Shelby in the drama, Peaky Blinders is one of the latest ‘Mark Makers’ (the brands term for its representatives) to have been signed for the latest MontBlanc campaign ‘What moves you, makes you’.
US Presidents Obama and Bush have both chosen the brand as their pen of choice, along with Queen Elizabeth II.
Multi Brand Fashion House
A partnership was entered into with multi brand fashion house, The Webster, to celebrate this relationship a limited edition capsule collection was launched.
The brand prides itself on being committed to quality and craftsmanship, where the master craftsmen pour their heart and soul into every piece they create. The strong international legacy which began with Dziambor, Lausen and Voss is continued today with the writing instruments being made in Hamburg whilst the time pieces are made in Switzerland and leather goods made in Florence.
In 1934 the company introduced its first piston pen filler.
The following year the company expanded its line of products to include leather goods such as notebooks and writing cases to be sold alongside its pens. Sadly, during World War II the company’s manufacturing facilities were destroyed. Eventually production continued in Denmark whilst the building re-build took place.
Embodying their commitment to quality and craftsmanship, the company launched its first line of fragrances in 2001 with the womens perfume named ‘Presence’. This is an amber vanilla fragrance with top note of Pepper and Mandarin Orange; middle notes of Orchid and Cyclamen and finally base notes of Brazilian Rosewood, Sandalwood, Mahogany, Patchouli and Vanilla Flower.
It was not until four years later in 2005 that the company launched its first men’s fragrance called Starwalker. It is a woody, spicy fragrance with top notes of Bamboo, Bergamot and Mandarin Orange; middle notes of Sandalwood, White Musk and Cedar; and finally base notes of Ginger, Fir Resin, Nutmeg and Amber. This scent was introduced in partnership with a Starwalker pen which offers style, performance and craftsmanship aligned in perfect harmony. The company say the pen is ‘Inspired by the future. Built for today.’
Not only was the Starwalker fragrance partnered with the Starwalker pen, it was also introduced alongside the men’s watch collection, Timewalker. A collection inspired by performance and which embodies the spirit of racing which started in the early 20th century.
