History of Guerlain

Founded in 1828, Guerlain’s creativity and daring visions have stunned admirers for almost two centuries. Since its inception, Guerlain has retained its production in France. Another aspect that has been intrinsic with the name almost since the beginning is the use of a bee symbol, seen on designs and bottles across the brand.

Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain opened his perfume store as both founder and perfumer, designing and composing the original fragrances with assistance from his two sons. The first store proved hugely successful and meant that in 1840, Guerlain opened his flagship store. The success continued to unprecedented levels – so much so that in 1853 Guerlain created Eau de Cologne Impériale for French Emperor Napoleon III and his wife. This led to Guerlain being given the title of His Majesty’s Official Perfumer. His success also got him noted among other royalty, highlighting the house as a luxurious brand.

When Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain died in 1864 his sons took over the brand, with one becoming a master perfumer – marking the beginning of a long tradition whereby the master perfumer role was handed down through the family. Guerlain’s son continued the success of the brand, creating classic scents. He was also innovative, as one of the first perfumers to use synthetic ingredients as well as natural extracts.

The Next Generation

Third-generation perfumer Jacques Guerlain effortlessly maintained the success of the name, as well as cementing the fragrances with timeless classics that are still renowned today including Mouchoir de Monsieur and Shalimar.

Jean-Paul Guerlain was the fourth-generation perfumer and the last family master perfumer. Again the classics kept coming with names such as Habit Rouge and Vétiver which are still sold today.

In a break from tradition, the Guerlain family sold the company to Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton in 1994. Thierry Wasser, a fifth-generation Guerlain perfumer is the current house perfumer who travels the world in order to source the best raw materials to keep to the brand’s high standards of fragrances.

The Guerlain brand has also branched out to offer a successful range of makeup and skincare, available across the world. In 2015, Guerlain opened La Ruche (‘Beehive’), a brand new production site for makeup and skincare. The facility is a brilliant combination of traditional methods with advanced technology as well as showing their long-lasting commitment to the French industry.

Guerlain Fragrances

The brand prides itself on producing some of the most beautiful works in perfumery – with centuries of experience and passion for creating exceptional scents.

Each perfumer of the Guerlain brand has been different but they all bring the same daring attitude to their craft, inventing and reinventing how fragrances are created. Many of the Guerlain perfume for men are still sold today, proving that their expertise has led to timeless fragrances.

Habit Rouge

Created by Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1965 as the first oriental fragrance for men, Habit Rouge pays homage to the iconic red jackets worn by horse riders. It emulates the nature of the sport, the mix of earth, warm leather and the forest. The wearer is refined, a master of their craft who operates on powerful instinct.

An oriental fragrance, the scent begins with top citrusy notes of orange, lemon, bergamot and sweet lime before warming spices and patchouli shine through. Leather adds a masculine touch before vanilla and amber finish the scent with a warming and gentle tone.

Habit Rouge is for the passionate wearer. The unpredictable hunter who has both sensuality and sophistication.

L’Instant Pour Homme

Celebrating the invigorating energy that comes with moments of emotion, L’Instant Pour Homme reflects these fragile yet wonderful fragments of time. It is a moment that can change anything, where everything is possible and the wearer takes the initiative to control the power of the moment.

With a vibrant pop of bergamot to start the scent, flowery heart notes add a softer touch before the base notes come in with a raw energy and masculine accent of cacao and patchouli.

The bottle reflects the modernity of the whole fragrance. Its geometric shape and rigorous form is finished with a natural wooden top for a strong, sleek and iconic look – just like its wearer.
