History of Ermenegildo Zegna
Ermenegildo Zegna’s fashion story began with a dream of creating the most beautiful fabrics in the world. Zegna’s father, a former watchmaker, also owned a wool mill and so in 1910, Ermenegildo and his brothers Edoardo and Mario founded the company and began to create high-quality fabrics. Zegna also had a huge passion to give back and to make the world a better place. This started close to his home – first with a road, then he built a town and eventually a community which today is known as Oasi Zegna. This philanthropic spirit has continued over the years. In 2000, Fondazione Zegna was set up as a charity organisation to promote the protection of the natural environment, social well-being and cultural development of the local community.
From 2014, the Group also financed the Ermenegildo Zegna Founder’s Scholarship which helps talented Italian graduates pursue international postgraduate studies. When Zegna passed away in 1966, his family ensured his legacy continued. In 1980, the first Zegna boutique opened in Paris which was swiftly followed by London (1983) and Milan (1985). Continuing to lead the way in men’s fashion, in 1991 the brand opened its boutique at the Palace Hotel in Beijing – making it the first western luxury menswear brand to open a boutique in China. 1999 saw the brand diversify into womenswear by acquiring the Italian brand Agnona and in 2008, the group established its main headquarters in Milan, in an attractive building designed by architects Antonio Citterio and Gianmaria Beretta. Today, the brand continues to be a family-run business, led by the third-generation of Zegnas and to this day, Zegna fabrics are one of Italy’s most praised exports.
