History of Carolina Herrera

Born in January 1939 in Caracas Venezuela to Guillermo Pacanins Acevedo and María Cristina Niño Passios, Carolina’s father was an air force officer and former governor of Caracas but it was Carolina’s grandmother, a socialite, who introduced her to the world of fashion. From a young age she took Carolina to shows such as Balenciaga and also bought her outfits by famous designers such as Dior and Lanvin.

Herrera’s career began when she became a publicist as well as working at Emilio Pucci’s boutique. She spent a lot of time in New York, eventually moving there, and frequently associated with Mick and Bianca Jagger as well as Andy Warhol at Studio 54. Carolina quickly became known for her dramatic style, appearing on best dressed lists and eventually being elected into its Hall of Fame.

It was in 1981 when Carolina’s friend Diana Vreeland, then Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, suggested that she should design her own clothing line. Herrera did this with huge success when she debuted her collection at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Club. From here, Herrera continued to grow with runway shows and presenting at New York fashion week.

Herrera’s bridal wear also garnered a lot of attention which led to her fitting renowned brides such as Caroline Kennedy, Evan Rachel Wood and Kristen Stewart’s character Bella Swan in ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’. Herrera’s relationship with the stars meant the brand found a new light on the red carpet, dressing celebrities such as Sandra Bullock and Taylor Swift. Carolina Herrera also became known as the ‘Fashion’s First Lady’ having dressed various First Ladies, including Jacqueline Onassis, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama.

As her career blossomed, Herrera chose to give back and was presented with the Nat King Cole Award for her charitable works and contributions to the EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund.

It was in the late 80s when Carolina Herrera decided to turn to the world of fragrances. She described it as ‘the invisible accessory’, recognising that fragrances can help bring a whole outfit together. Herrera turned to Puig, a renowned fragrance business, to release her debut fragrance Carolina Herrera Eau de Parfum which was met with great success. This partnership and success continued and in 1997, Carolina’s daughter joined as Creative Director for the brand’s fragrance division.
